Wood Engravings by Thijs Mauve by –
Thijs Mauve [1915–1996] was a Dutch artist whose skills included wood engraving. Amongst the surviving blocks (some of which his widow has left to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) are a suite of ten images that he engraved for use in a book , published in 1949, commemorating the completion of the reconstruction of Rotterdam Harbour after its destruction during World War II. These are striking images and seem to me worth reproducing. Set in Lutetia and printed on Zerkall Ingres, the sheets French-folded, there will be 100 copies.

50 copies were printed by me (of which 40 remain).
The book contains 96 pages, each 330 × 195mm, and is case-bound (at The Binding Place in Worcester) in a claret cloth, with dust wrapper and slipcase. The text is accompanied by 23 of my linocut prints.
Words were cast on the Ludlow Typograph and printed on a heavy Zerkall paper.
The cost is £100 plus p&p at cost - this is £5 in the UK.

Printing at the University Press, Oxford, 1660-1780 by Martyn Ould
The first of three volumes of a definitive study of printing at the University Press in Oxford during its formative period. This volume covers the premises the Press occupied, the people who ran it, and the source and use of the paper it used. Type-set in Van Dijck and printed letterpress at Gloucester Typesetting. 168pp with ten tipped-in photographs of contemporary documents. The standard edition (£125) is case-bound in a dust jacket. The de luxe edition (£320) is quarter-bound in leather with an additional 40pp volume of correspondence from the London paper dealers, all in a slip case. Future volumes will cover the type used and the working practices.

The Lost Colours of the Cyclades by John Sutcliffe

John Sutcliffe answers both questions and takes us on a tour of the many glowing colours that once appeared. The book includes a portfolio of large sheets hand-painted in the twenty representative colours he identified together with a swatch card. Described as ‘nutty’ by one purchaser, the book also contains some authentic Greek recipes. 135 copies printed letterpress in Perpetua at The Old School Press with colour tip-ins. 54pp. £185.
